Does gum reshaping hurt?

Gum contouring is growing in popularity because it fixes a common problem, that ‘gummy smile’, it can also be used in cases of gum disease/ receding gums, in the way of gum grafting. There are so many questions when it comes to gum shaping because it’s not a common topic. Frequent questions include: is gum contouring safe? Is gum contouring permanent? And the one we’ll be covering today, is gum reshaping or contouring painful?

Let’s get straight into it…

What can you expect when you have gum contouring?

gum contouring intends to remove excess gum tissue or reshape the existing gum tissue. This will be done after your entire mouth is numbed, that should be music to your ears, as it means gum contouring is pain-free! A laser is used to carefully eliminate the unneeded gum tissue and will be done by a fully qualified dentist only. Removing some of the excess gum tissue will give you a more aesthetically pleasing smile if you do have a gummy smile at present, most people who have this treatment report a significant boost in confidence!

What is the gum contouring recovery process like?

You may experience some pain and inflammation in the gums for around 7 - 10 days after your treatment, however, over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammation medication should help significantly with this.

Here are some tips to aid the recovery time:

Keep your oral hygiene up, but be as gentle as possible. It’s important to maintain your oral hygiene routine but you must be careful when brushing and flossing and we recommend using an alcohol-free mouthwash or simply sat water mix to help keep the gums clean.

As we mentioned earlier, you can manage pain and inflammation over-the-counter pain medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. You may notice some slight scabbing of the gums, we encourage you to leave this alone as this is part of the normal gum contouring recovery process.

Avoid those spicy and crunchy foods to prevent further gum irritation. Try and opt for softer foods such as yoghurt, pasta, eggs, soft cooked vegetables and yes, ice cream!

Try and go easy on the exercise, taking a little time off will help you heal at a faster rate.

Before you go, let’s answer some of those other frequently asked questions.

Is gum contouring permanent?

Gum lasering is considered permanent as it’s unlikely your gums will grow back over the area that was lasered.

What does gum contouring cost?

Gum contouring can cost from around £150-£250 per tooth. However, it’s worth bearing in mind the gum contouring cost varies massively and the way that it is calculated.

When can you get gum contouring and reshaping?

The answer is anytime, as long as your gums are healthy! Gum contouring after Invisalign is pretty common. After other cosmetic dentistry, the gums are often the final tweak that gives a beautiful finish to your new smile!
