How long does a dental implant last?

Have you got missing teeth? A popular way to replace missing teeth is by swapping gaps for permanent teeth! What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth placed into the gum and jaw bone to replace missing teeth. Many people are in search of a ‘tooth implant’ more commonly known as a dental implant. They are the most natural way of replacing teeth, have great longevity and are low maintenance. You can have a singular dental implant or you may have multiple missing teeth and opt to have multiple dental implants or all on 4 dental implants often referred to as ‘permanent dentures’.

Now, if you’re thinking about dental implants, you’re going to want to know how long they may last. Dental implants cost a fair bit more than a denture and therefore knowing what the benefits may be is important.

How long do dental implants last?

The longevity of the dental implant, like everything, will depend on how well you look after them. Dental implants can last a lifetime, as once they have been surgically placed into the jaw, the bone heals around the implant holding it firmly in place. Dental implants also help to keep your jaw bone in great condition, as when we lose teeth the supporting bone often reduces in density, which can lead to unpleasant consequences.

So, what may reduce the lifespan of dental implants?
  1. Not visiting your dentist for routine checkups and hygiene appointments. A dental implant acts a lot like a natural tooth, but this means that the things that may lead to tooth loss with a natural tooth will also apply to those with dental implants. Allowing plaque to build up, or gum disease to take hold of your oral health can lead to implant failure. Maintaining great oral health and keeping up to date with your checks will avoid this happening.
  2. Reduced bone structure. When your dental implant is placed the dentist will be aware of your bone density and will pass this information to you. When you have had missing teeth for a long period of time it is common for your bone density to decrease. Unfortunately, this may impact the chance of success with dental implants. The good news is, however, that your dentist will be able to assess this for you and discuss the chance of success before your dental implants are placed.
  3. Poor dental implant placement. There’s a lot to be said about picking the best dentist for the job! Many dentists do not deal with oral surgery and therefore dental implants are not something they’re experienced in. We suggest finding a dental implant specialist to complete the dental implant procedure for you. A brilliant dental implant specialist will boost the longevity of your dental implants massively.

Are you considering having a dental implant? Or perhaps you’re thinking about multiple dental implants? We suggest having a consultation with your dentist, or local dental implant specialist. When looking for a dentist who has advanced qualifications in dental implants, we suggest doing a simple ‘dental implant near me’ google search, this will throw up some names for you to research. Make sure you check out their testimonials, and their qualifications and finally when you book a consultation make sure the team is friendly and helpful.
