How does CBCT assist in Paediatric Dentistry (children’s dental care)?
CBCT can assist dentists in detecting the growth of infants' teeth. It helps estimate the size of permanent teeth in advance, predict when they will come, and determine the position in which they are likely to grow.
Is a Dental CT Scan a painful procedure?
No, you shouldn't be afraid. While having a CT scan may cause some people to feel uneasy, it is not painful. The scan itself only takes a few minutes.
How does CBCT help with complex treatments like implants and orthodontics?
CBCT is vital for precise planning. It is used to analyze teeth and bites for crowns and implants, making tooth replacements easier. For orthodontists, it helps create better strategies for improving tooth growth and alignment.
What are the key advantages of using CBCT over traditional X-rays?
CBCT allows dentists to view the entire facial skeleton, head, and neck in clear detail. It is a milestone that provides precise 3D images, helping to accurately diagnose complex issues, find the smallest root canals, and determine the exact location of nerves and impacted teeth.
What is a Dental CT Scan (CBCT), and why is it necessary?
A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan is the newest type of CAT scan that provides three-dimensional images of your teeth, nerves, and bones. It's necessary when a dentist or orthodontist needs a higher degree of accuracy than traditional 2D X-rays to better diagnose your tooth problem.
What types of appliances are used in orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontists use various appliances to apply pressure to move the teeth and jaws into the correct position. These include:
Fixed Appliances (Braces): Traditional metal braces, special fixed appliances (to control habits like thumb-sucking), and fixed space maintainers.
Removable Appliances: Aligners (like Invisalign or invisible braces), lip and cheek bumpers, removable retainers, and jaw repositioning appliances.
Discreet Options: Invisalign (clear, removable) and Incognito hidden lingual braces (placed on the back of the teeth).
How do I know if I truly need orthodontic treatment like braces?
You should not get braces just because they are trendy; they serve a medical purpose. Your general dentist will first perform a comprehensive examination, including X-rays, clinical exams, photographs, and plaster models. If they identify issues like overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, misplaced midline, gaps, or severe teeth crowding, they will recommend you see an orthodontist, who will then finalize the ideal treatment plan for your specific case.
What qualifies a dentist to be an orthodontist, and what do they primarily treat?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed two additional years of specialized study after graduating from dentistry. Orthodontists primarily deal with poorly positioned teeth and jaws, treating patients with improper alignment (such as crooked teeth) to improve oral health, strengthen teeth, and enhance aesthetics.

When an implant is placed, your bone then needs to grow onto and fuse to the implant, in a process known as Osseo integration, if it is to become a firm foundation for a crown. In the unlikely event that your bone fails to grow onto an implant, we offer the choice of either a 50% refund, or to replace the implant completely free of charge one more time. We have usually found that patients wish to try again and that a second failure is exceptionally rare.

What about aftercare?
Root-treated teeth should be treated just the same as any other tooth. Remember to clean your teeth at least once a day, preferably with a fluoride toothpaste. Cut down on sugary snacks, and keep them only to mealtimes if possible. See your dentist for regular check-ups.
Where can this treatment be carried out?
Root canal treatment is a routine dental procedure, which your dentist will be happy to do for you.
Will the tooth be safe after treatment?
Yes. However, it is better to restore the tooth with a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.
What if I don’t have the treatment?
The alternative is to have the tooth out. Once the pulp is destroyed, it can’t heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. Although some people would prefer an extraction, it is usually best to keep as many natural teeth as possible.
What if it happens again?
Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated.
What will my tooth look like after treatment?
In the past, a root filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques this does not usually happen. If there is any discolouration, there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance.
What does it involve?
The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.
At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.
The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.
Does it hurt?
No. A local anaesthesia is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done.
Why is root canal treatment needed?
If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth.
This may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury.
Can dental implants be removed or replaced?
Yes — though designed to be permanent, they can be removed or replaced if necessary.
What materials are dental implants made of?
Most are made from titanium, which is biocompatible, or zirconia for a metal-free option.
Do dental implants set off metal detectors?
No. Implants are made of titanium or ceramic, which typically don’t trigger detectors.
How many implants can be placed at once?
Several implants can be placed in a single visit, depending on your treatment plan.
Can I eat normally with dental implants?
Yes, once healed. Initially, you may need to eat softer foods while the implant integrates with your jawbone.
What is the recovery process like after implant surgery?
Mild swelling or discomfort may occur for a few days. Most patients return to normal activities within 1–2 days.
How do dental implants compare to bridges?
Implants don’t require grinding down healthy teeth and can last longer than bridges with proper care.
Can I get financing for dental implants?
Many clinics offer payment plans, including interest-free options, to make treatment more affordable.
How much do dental implants cost?
Costs vary depending on your needs. Your dentist will provide a tailored treatment plan and quotation.
Can dental implants be done in one day?
In some cases, yes. Immediate-load implants can be fitted with a temporary crown on the same day.
Are there any age limits for dental implants?
There’s no upper age limit, but implants are usually placed in adults whose jawbones have fully developed.
Can I get an implant if I have gum disease?
Gum disease must be treated first, as healthy gums are essential for implant success.
Will I need bone grafting before getting implants?
Only if your jawbone isn’t thick or dense enough. Bone grafting helps ensure long-term stability of the implant.
Can dental implants fail over time?
Yes, although rare. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, or certain health issues can cause failure. Regular maintenance is key.
Do dental implants look like natural teeth?
Absolutely. Implants are designed to match the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth.
Are dental implants safe?
Yes — they’re a well-established, long-term treatment when placed by qualified dental professionals.
Can smokers get dental implants?
Smoking can slow healing and increase the risk of implant failure. Quitting before and after surgery is strongly recommended.
How do I care for my dental implants?
Brush and floss daily, use an antibacterial mouthwash, and attend regular check-ups just as you would for natural teeth.
What is the success rate of dental implants?
Success rates are typically 95% or higher when placed by experienced professionals and properly cared for.
Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?
Most healthy adults with good oral hygiene and sufficient jawbone are suitable. Your dentist will assess your gums, bone density, and overall health.
Can I have dental implants if I am a smoker?
We now know that smoking does affect both natural teeth and implants. For natural teeth, smoking increases the risks of gum disease. For implants, smoking slightly increases the risks of complications at every stage of implant treatment. We would recommend to stop smoking to reduce any chances of implant failure in the long run.
The good news is that this increased risk if very slight and we successfully treat patients who are smokers every day at Dental Concepts.
How long will the implant last?
If the integration is successful and the area is well cared for and maintained with regular reviews and monitoring, an implant should last a lifetime.
It is possible to chip a crown or bridge on implants in the same way that it is possible to chip a tooth and sometimes the outer screw over the implants may become loose which can be easily corrected. We recommend annual reviews with x-rays to check the bone levels around the implants in addition to your regular check-ups with your dentist. We offer an annual review and you can enter in one of our membership plans with check-ups and hygiene sessions to take care of the treated area.
Can I get my implant put at the time when the tooth is removed?
Yes, in some cases, our skilled surgeons and dentists can place an implant immediately after extraction in the socket, provided there is no infection around the socket and if it meets with all the suitable criteria gone through the assessment. It can then be covered with a temporary tooth till the healing takes place. But most of the times, it is better to wait for the healing to take place before placing dental implants.
Don’t worry because you need never have a gap – there are several temporary replacement solutions available to make sure there is no embarrassment at any stage through the implant process.
Can implants help with dentures?
Absolutely yes! Dentures are most patients’ nightmare due to the difficulty in wearing and the effect on all aspects of life. Small dentures can be replaced with just a few implants, or complete (full) dentures can either be held in position with implants, or of course replaced with implants all together – surely the most amazing dental transformation available. Implant supported dentures provide the much needed stability and confidence that the patient needs to eat and smile with ease.
What happens if the implant fails? Is there any guaranty?
Any surgical procedure can have complications and dental implants are no exception. At the assessment stage, we look into all the potential side effects and complications if any and those are explained to the patient. If there are any contraindications present, we may defer or cancel the treatment.
We do regularly audit our success rates and have seen about a 95% rate in the last year which is a very impressive figure. Trained and experienced surgeons, dentists, co-ordinators and nurses help in providing a quality treatment which should last a long time.
How long will the treatment take?
Normally the treatment times can be a little as 8-10 weeks from placement of the implant to fit of the final crown. However, sometimes treatment can take longer depending on the level of complexity of your case, with some patients not finishing for up to a year. The exact time frame will be ascertained from your comprehensive assessment including the CT scan done at the practice.
If my tooth is removed, will I be left with a gap?
There are a few factors which can make it necessary to wait for healing after tooth removal before an implant can be placed; the main factor being if there is any sign of infection. If infection is present, we need to allow a healing phase of 8-12 weeks before we can place the implants.
There are some cases where we can go for Immediate Implants and then cover with immediate crowns or teeth, but that will depend on the suitability assessment done in the planning stage.
Don’t worry because you never need to have a gap if you don’t want one – there are all sorts of temporary solutions, both fixed and removable, to make sure there is no embarrassment at any stage through the implant process.
Will the implant treatment be very painful?
This is one of the most common concerns for people thinking about having an implant.
The majority of implants are placed under a normal dental local anaesthetic. Though the local anaesthetic injections can sting a little, we have systems in place to reduce the pain by using very thin needles and warm anaesthetic. We also have a computerized injection system which is called the wand which can provide painfree injection. Once you are numb, you will not feel anything sharp or painful at all throughout your treatment. You will feel some pressing and pushing during the procedure as well as some vibration during the drilling stage, but this will not be sharp or painful in any way and your dentist will check to make sure you are completely numb before they start the surgery.
For bigger procedures such as multiple implants or complex cases, sedation can be provided. Sedation is not a general anaesthetic, but makes patients feel very comfortable and relaxed and they rarely remember much about the procedure afterwards which is an advantage for many nervous patients.
Once the anaesthetic has worn o you may need to take over-the-counter painkillers but is not unusual to have a very minimal level of pain or even no pain whatsoever. During the first few days after surgery, it’s possible the gum may feel a little sore as it heals and you might wish to stick to soft foods that are easy to eat. With a single dental implant, you should be fine to go back to work the next day.
Will the implant treatment be very expensive?
It is perfectly normal to consider carefully the cost of any serious investment. It is a lot to spend on your mouth and it is down to each individual patient to decide if the improvements to the quality of life, function, confidence and appearance are worthwhile. We only ever prescribe treatment that is necessary and would like to reiterate the fact that we are always there for you for the very important after care and maintenance of the implant treatment which is very important.

As a team, we pride ourselves of having well trained implant co-ordinators and nurses along the state of the art technology and equipment which will assure our patients and us of the quality of treatment provided. It’s also a good idea to visit our practice and meet with some of the team. That way, you’ll be able to make your mind up very quickly. Our experience is that the decision rarely comes down to price.
Can I preview my veneers and smile before they are finally fitted?
A digital smile test drive will be done before you actually go in for porcelain veneers. This will give you an idea and feel of how the new smile will look after the actual veneers are fitted. You can use these temporary test drive for a few days to show your loved ones and get a feel of the new smile.
How much do veneers cost?
The cost of porcelain veneers starts from £695 per tooth.
What is the most common reason to have veneers replaced?
The porcelain veneer is very strong and should not break under normal circumstances. If gum recession occurs the root of the tooth may become exposed. Patients may want new veneers to cover the roots. The integrity of veneered teeth is marginally compromised, and the veneer is bonded to the existing teeth. There is no higher incidence of decay provided that the veneers are properly cared for as detailed above, regular brushing with toothpaste, and flossing.
How do I care for my veneers?
Brushing two times each day for two minutes, flossing daily, and wearing a bite guard at night are great ways to protect the veneers. It is also beneficial to avoid eating very hard foods like almonds, or cracking shells with the front veneers.
How many veneers do I need?
A prosthodontic consultation is needed to determine how many veneers are required or if veneers are the best option. It is a good idea to have an even number of veneers. Two, four, eight, ten or twelve veneers give the best aesthetic results.
How long do dental veneers last?
Typically, a veneer lasts approximately 5-10 years. They do not require any special care other than regular brushing, flossing, and visits to the prosthodontist. If they are properly cared for then they can last much longer. Professional cleanings every 6 months and yearly exams are highly recommended.
Who is not a good candidate for porcelain veneers?
If you have extensive tooth decay, it's not wise to simply cover it up with veneers. Talk to your prosthodontist about removing the decay before getting started. If you grind your teeth, this could also be a problem but your prosthodontist may offer you a solution to help guard against damaging your veneers, such as a mouth night guard.
What are the drawbacks of dental veneers?
Once you have had your tooth prepared for the veneer, the process is not reversible. In the case that a veneer cracks, it is difficult to repair without having to replace the entire veneer. It is important to not have habits like pen-chewing or nail-biting as these can crack the veneer. Veneers are not a good option for people with poor gum health. In addition, people who grind or clench their teeth are at risk for chipping or cracking their veneers. Lastly, veneers are still susceptible to decay so it is important that you maintain optimal oral health and visit your dentist regularly.
Why do I need dental veneers?
The preparation of veneers preserves the most amount of tooth structure, as very little needs to be removed. They can improve the appearance of your teeth, and gum tissues respond well to dental veneers. The color can be custom selected, and in the case of porcelain veneers they are stain resistant.
What is involved in getting a dental veneer?
Getting a porcelain veneer is usually a multi-step process. The first step is to get a consultation with a prosthodontist. At this visit, you can outline your goals and concerns, and a prosthodontist will explain how veneers will work for you. X-rays or impressions of your teeth may be needed. The second step is to prepare the tooth for the veneer. A small amount of tooth structure is removed and an impression is made. The prosthodontist will then place temporary veneers. At the next appointment, temporaries are removed, and the final veneer is bonded to your tooth.
In the case of veneers made from tooth colored filling material, or composite bonding, this is a one appointment process in which the prosthodontist will remove a small amount of tooth structure and bond filling material to your teeth. This type of veneer is not as long lasting and doesn't resist staining as well as a porcelain veneer.
Why do I need dental veneers?
Dental veneers are a great solution for people with discolored, worn down, chipped, misaligned, spaced, uneven or irregularly shaped front teeth.
Should I choose composite bonding or porcelain veneers?
You will undergo a comprehensive consultation with the dentist at the practice including scans and X-rays before a treatment plan is advised. If the needed changes are minor and the teeth function properly, cosmetic bonding is an appropriate choice. If teeth are spaced, broken, dark, and/or the patient clenches or grinds their teeth, then porcelain veneers may be the preferred option.
What are the types of veneers?
Porcelain and composite bonding are the most common veneer materials. Composite veneers are made of a resin that is shaped and bonded to a tooth to enhance the appearance. Porcelain veneers are usually made in a lab and are more resistant to staining, compared to other materials.
What are dental veneers?
Veneers are thin durable shells made of tooth colored materials that are bonded to the surface of a tooth to enhance its appearance.
How long does it take? How long does it last?
Two weeks after the dentist delivers your Enlighten Whitening trays. These are thin and comfortable and must be worn in bed for 14 nights. Then on the 15th day you need to see us for the second treatment, which takes only 40 minutes. Results can last indefinitely with some very simple maintenance. Wearing the trays for 1 night every other month. Continuing to brush with Tooth Serum Toothpaste will also prolong results.
Is it safe? Is there any pain?
It is completely safe. The materials used in Enlighten Whitening have been used in dentistry for over 100 years. You may get some sensitivity, however your dentist will give you easy to use desensitising swabs to take home, which will work immediately.
