Understanding Sedation and Relaxation

When faced with a challenge or something we’re afraid of, such as a visit to the dentist, our bodies naturally produce substances that raise our anxiety. However, we can train our bodies to work against this anxiety, because it’s simply not possible to be anxious and relaxed at the same time. Learning relaxation helps control our anxiety.

What is Intravenous (IV) Sedation?

We offer an Intravenous (IV) sedation service. This is given by injection, either in the back of your hand or in your arm. The dose will depend on the amount of treatment needed and the length of time it will take to complete the procedure.

When under IV sedation, you become drowsy and unaware of any treatment, but you are still able to cooperate with the dentist. This allows us to complete necessary treatments efficiently while you remain fully relaxed.

How We Support Our Nervous Patients

Being fearful or phobic of the dentist is actually fairly common, but at Dental Concepts we’re incredibly proud to support our previously nervous patients, who are much less fearful after visiting us.

Here are just some of the ways we support our nervous patients to reduce dental phobia:

  • We have a dedicated team of Treatment Coordinators who you can speak with throughout your journey, outside of the dental practice.
  • We offer a complimentary virtual consultation to let you get a feel for Dental Concepts before visiting the practice.
  • We put you in control of your treatment—simply put your hand up at any point and we will pause what we are doing.
  • Feel safe in the knowledge that you will have local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort at any time of sensitive dental treatment.

Aftercare Following IV Sedation

The effects of sedative medicine take some time to wear off. Your dentist will tell you exactly how long the drugs will take to clear from your body.

It is crucial that you do not engage in any activities requiring full concentration during this recovery period. You won’t be able to drink alcohol, drive, or operate machinery until the effects have fully subsided.
